<p>LZ 9 machte seine erste Fahrt am 2. Oktober 1911. Nach dem Umbau des Zeppelins vom 21. Oktober bis 23. November 1911 (Einbau eines weiteren 8 Meter langen Gaszellensegments) wurde das Luftschiff vom Heer übernommen und bekam für das verlorengegangene Heeresluftschiff <a href="LZ_5" title="LZ 5">Z II</a> die Kennung: Ersatz Z II. Das Heer nutzte Ersatz Z II als Schul- und Ausbildungsschiff.

</p><p>Seine Standorte als Heeresluftschiff waren <a href="Flugplatz_Baden-Oos" title="Flugplatz Baden-Oos">Baden-Oos</a>, <a href="K%C3%B6ln" title="Köln">Köln</a>, <a href="Metz" title="Metz">Metz</a> und <a href="Gotha" title="Gotha">Gotha</a>.
